Beaumont Rehabilitation Unit

Rehabilitation UnitBeaumont's Rehabilitation Unit differs substantially from most other hospital environments. As a patient, you won't spend your days in bed or in a room. You won't even wear a hospital gown. Instead, you'll be involved in every aspect of your care and rehabilitation.

Your team is coordinated by the physiatrist (a physician who specializes in physical medicine) and rehabilitation nurse, and can include:

  • Physical therapist
  • Occupational therapist
  • Speech and language pathologist
  • Continuing care coordinator
  • Social worker
  • Pastoral care specialist
  • Dietitian
  • Neuropsychologist

Speech and language pathologists provide assessment and treatment for speech, language, voice and cognitive problems. Swallowing difficulties are also treated.

Individual and group therapies are offered with computer assisted treatment. After discharge, you may continue your treatment as an outpatient at one of Beaumont's programs in Royal Oak or Troy. You and your family's education is a major focus of the Rehabilitation Unit. Specialized books and video tapes are made available so you can better understand your condition and treatment.
