Jeffrey D. Band, M.D., is the Beaumont Health System chair, Epidemiology, section chief of the division of Infectious Diseases and International Medicine at Beaumont, Royal Oak and director of the prevention and control of health care-associated infections for Beaumont Health System. He is also a professor of medicine at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.
He specializes in the clinical care of patients with infectious diseases and tropical medicine. His research interests include defining methods to reduce health care associated infections, especially those due to implanted vascular devices, outbreak investigations and improving health care for travelers going abroad.
A graduate of the University of Michigan School of Medicine, Dr. Band completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Missouri. He then went on to the University of Wisconsin Center for Health Sciences to obtain his infectious diseases training, followed by an additional 24 months at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention where he obtained his epidemiologic training. Prior to joining Beaumont Health System in 1983, he served as the director of special pathogens branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and as an associate professor at Wayne State University School of Medicine.
Dr. Band has authored more than125 manuscripts and text book chapters and has received numerous awards and commendations during his career including: the Commendation Medal from the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services for his work on defining toxic shock syndrome; the Alexander D. Langmuir Award; the James H. Nakano Award; the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America Leadership Award; the American Society for Microbiology Distinguished Service Award; and the Beaumont Hospital Excellence Award in Teaching and Dedication to Infectious Diseases Training of postgraduate fellows in infectious diseases.
Dr. Band remains an advisor to the Ministry of Health of Canada, serves on the Committee on Clinical Tropical Medicine and Travelers Health for the American Society of Travel Medicine and Hygiene and is a fellow and former board member of the American College of Physicians for Michigan. Dr. Band has served in leadership positions in the Infectious Diseases Society of America, Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, International Society of Travel Medicine, American Society for Microbiology and the Michigan State Medical Society.
