For Mothers Who Are Breastfeeding
Nuclear medicine tests or therapies use radioactive materials, which may pass through you to your breast milk. To prevent this from being ingested by your infant, it is recommended that breastfeeding be stopped for a period of time after your nuclear medicine appointment. For most nuclear medicine studies the interruption period will be brief.
You need to inform the technologist that you are currently breastfeeding before the start of your test. The technologist will then inform you of how long before you can begin breastfeeding again.
In order to avoid breast engorgement or to keep your milk flowing, you may wish to use a breast pump during this time period. Please discard the breast milk and do not use it. After the interruption period, you may resume breastfeeding.
If you have any other specific questions regarding breastfeeding, please contact your personal physician or call us and ask to speak with the nuclear medicine physician or the nuclear medicine physicist
